Hush n Wonder

fashion, food, and all things fabulous

John Singer Sargent's "In the Luxembourg Garden at Twilight," 1879

Fashion and art are two of those very special things that have the ability to take you outside of the world you live in, and into another place and time.  When I look at the above painting, I can’t help but feel as though I’m the one taking a stroll in that lovely garden.  The darkening rosiness of the sky and the rising moon perfectly compliment the intimacy of the couple strolling through park.  The way the figures in the background are painted (notice how they are merely black shadows), makes it seem as though the couple are completely caught up in the beauty of the night.  Fashion spreads recreate moods the same way art does and it was Sir Francis Bacon who said, “Fashion is only the attempt to realize art in living forms and social intercourse.”    If I were ever lucky enough to dream up spreads in fashion publications, I can assure you this is a painting I’d go to time and time again for inspiration.  Below are some shots from different magazines that not only showcase beautiful clothes – they capture moments in time.
