Hush n Wonder

fashion, food, and all things fabulous

Monthly Archives: November 2010

I don’t know about you guys, but I recieved an extra large number of e-mails yesterday from my favorite retailers informing me of “cyber Monday”. Although I liked the idea, I was completely overwhelmed by it all. I was home sick, and spent the majority of the day napping. But I did try to browse my favorite sites to see if I could find any exceptional deals. I ended up getting a pair of mukluks from The Mukluk Store (I’m beyond excited! I first wrote about them here.) I also spent a large amount of time on probably my very favorite fashion website Net A Porter. This is a site with beyond gorgeous luxury brand clothing. Most of the time, I visit the site and lust over everything and never buy. But THIS time, a huge sale was taking place. Best of all, it’s not just a one day sale, so I can take my time deciding on what I want to buy — I’m torn between a gorgeous Paul & Joe Sister tunic and a Rebecca Taylor ruffled vest I’ve been eyeing since late summer. Decisions, decisions. Bottom line, if you haven’t visited this site you should. It’s really easy to navigate and products are displayed beautifully. Some of the items even have videos, so you can really get an idea of what it is your buying – which is so important when you’re trying to find quality items online. Which shirt would you get? I’ll let you know what I decide on ūüôā

Winter season is upon us. Maybe not officially, but since the first frost, there’s a certain deadness that is unmistakeably late November. The evenings come earlier, the mornings are colder, and nothing is better than looking at the outside world from within a warm, cozy home. I love the condo I share with my boyfriend. It’s large, has beautiful wood cherry floors, and is really starting to feel like home. The one thing it’s lacking? A big, old fireplace. To me, nothing says home like a roaring fire. From the woody smell, to the crackling and popping sounds, there is nothing I would rather have on a chilly evening. To compensate for our lack of a fire place, I burn LOTS of candles. And I mean lots. In every room, far too often. Below are some of my favorites I thought I’d share with you. But at the end of the day, smells or brand of candles don’t really matter. As long as there’s that warm glow.

Hotel Costes Pink Candle $89 – The lovely floral scent produced by this candle takes you away to another place and time. Almost makes the pricetag worth it. This scent is seriously chic and although I’ve yet to purchase it, you better believe it’s the first candle I smell when I enter C.O. Bigelow.

Capri Blue Volcano $28 – I’ve yet to find stronger scented candles than those of Capri Blue. The fragrance is seriously rich and will scent a room for days. The volcano scent is slightly romantic and extremely fresh. I love it.

Henri Bendel Apricot $26 – These candles are my go-to housewarming gifts. The scents are amazing. So amazing, that it’s pretty much impossible not to like them. They’re delicate, fresh, and never too strong. And the boxes they come in are real cute.

Tocca Candle Cleopatra $36 – These candles make me feel glamorous. The scents are worthy of an Italian princess, and are so old-school and fabulous. If you’re not quite sure of what I’m talking about you have to smell them. It’s kind of indescribable.

Yankee Candle Frosty Air $26 – I grew up with Yankee Candles. Mistletoe reminds me of my first car, Fresh Cotton when I first redid my bedroom and there are a million more in between. Let’s face it, we’ve all had a love affair with a Yankee candle at one time or another.

Diptyque Baies Noir $68 – My roomie in college pointed out these candles to me as we were watching an episode of Sex and the City. Carrie always burned these delicious candles. And trust me, they’re fabulous (why else would Carrie have them?) This particular scent is a little more mysterious and dark then the ones I’ve smelled before and I’m just loooooving it.

Woodwick in Fireside $32 – This candle got me through finals during college. I burned it non-stop while studying in my room, waiting oh-so patiently to head home for the holidays. The smell is home. It’s so comforting and the soft crackling noise these candles make is amazing.

One of the Thanksgiving table settings.

Thanksgiving might just be my favorite holiday.¬† It’s a time to catch up with family, eat lots of food, and remember how much there is to be thankful for.¬† It’s also the unofficial start to the holiday season.¬† For as long as I can remember, our family has avoided shopping on Black Friday, and spent the day decorating our house for Christmas.¬† It’s my favorite day of the year filled with Christams music, leftovers, and lots of decorations.¬† Here are a few pictures of the end result at my parent’s house.¬† I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are now ready for the busy upcoming month!¬† I know I sure am!

My very favorite ornament.

Roar being cute

It’s impossible to turn on the TV or open a magazine and not be bombarded by news of Kate and William’s upcoming nuptials. My view on it all? I LOVE it! I grew up having a serious crush on Prince Harry, and like most of my generation, remember Princess Diana’s death all too well. Before she passed, I knew very little of Princess Di, but I was intrigued by this woman the whole world was morning and quickly learned what an amazing woman she was. When I was able to visit London a few years ago, I was reminded of Lady Diana everywhere I went, and my fascination with her grew. I was especially blown away by a collection of her gowns on display at Kensington Palace. Accompanying the dresses were photos and videos of Diana wearing the garments. I was instantly amazed by her natural elegance and beauty. She had such a quiet confidence, and everything about her was pure class. As of late, Kate Middleton has been getting quite a few comparisons to Lady Diana, and it is very clear that Middleton has the same refinement and natural chicness that her would be mother-in-law possessed. I also love that Kate’s engagement ring was once Diana’s unbelievably beautiful sapphire. The color is absolutely amazing, and Kate paired it perfectly with a royal blue Issa dress when she announced her engagement. Now, I’m waiting with the rest of the world to see what gown she’ll choose for her April wedding!

I’ve been in a particularly feminine mood lately. I’ve found myself drawn to things in the lightest of pinks, I’ve been indulging in bubble baths, and wanting to invest in some adorable nighties. Below are some of my girliest guilty pleasures. What are yours?

  • Peony Pink- I love everything about peonies. From how big and fluffy they look, to that perfect blush hue they have. I used to buy them fresh and recently bought a silk bouquet so I can enjoy them all the time.

  • Sex and the City Marathons – I could watch episodes of Sex and the City all day, every day. I’ve seen all of them one hundred times, and have yet to get sick of them. The clothes, the friendships, the clothes (did I already mention the clothes?) It’s love.

  • Cupcakes (Cause they’re pretty) – I have always loved cupcakes. And when I’m craving sweets, there is nothing I’d rather have. And I think the main reason I adore them so much is how cute they are. Is that bad? Am I judging a book by it’s cover? Oh well.

  • Naps – You’re probably wondering what’s so girly about naps? I like mine post bubble bath, in delicate pajamas, with stuffed animals and soft blankets. This all rarely happens, but when it does, it’s pretty much the best thing ever.

  • Smelling Wonderful- I think wearing a good perfume is one of the girliest things out there. It’s something I believe to be deeply personal and I love find a scent to call my own. My dresser is filled with pretty bottles of perfume and it makes me happy just looking at it.

Normally, I have to struggle to think of things I want for Christmas or gifts I would like to give. This year, that’s really not the case! At the top of my list, is a pair of cozy mukluks. I’ve been obssessed with furry boots for a while, and after doing some research have fallen for Muks, which pride themselves on being the “original mukluk boot.” The style and color options are rich looking and perfectly mix the classic Aboriginal vibe with boho rock. The designer of the boots, Jamie Cooke founded the brand in 2003 and has developed faithful followers like Kate Moss, Nicky Hilton, and Kate Hudson. Now it’s a matter of just choosing the right style. I’m loving the wrap muks, but am way too in love with the originals. What is your favorite snow boot?
